Hi everyone,
Welcome to 2011! My name is James Alexander and I am president of the Sydney University I.T. Society for 2011. For those of you who are returning members, a big welcome back. For those of you who are new to SUITS I hope you have a great year and make sure to get involved at one of our many events this semester.
SUITS is one of the largest student-run I.T. societies in Australia and whether your an I.T. student or an Arts student, taking part in our events will help you get more out of your time at Sydney. Many of our past members are doing their PhD’s in Computer Science at the University, some are abroad at world renowned Universities like Berkeley, while others are working for Google and some of the top firms in Asia-pacific region. University of Sydney has the largest clubs and societies program in the southern hemisphere and taking part in it will greatly enrich your experience at the University.
This semester we are running lots of events. Our weekly Hack Sessions are where students and lecturers present on topical subjects in I.T. and Computer Science. From an overview of Artificial Intelligence to tutorials on CCS3 its a great weekly tech talk. We’re currently looking for presenters so if there is something you have experience in and think other people will enjoy, please do consider presenting. Also on this semester is our weekly BBQ which is our most popular event. As you have probably heard, $1 all-you-can-eat; best BBQ on campus is not a bad deal and it helps bring out students and researchers into a common area to meet and talk. If you’re wearing one of our new T-Shirts you get a free drink which means by the end of the year you’ll be ‘making’ money! Our social nights will be on Wednesday nights with our first social night this Wednesday from 6pm, followed by a first years meet-and-greet in week 2 and then a drinks night in week 3.
If your studying I.T. I highly recommend getting involved as it will greatly help you in making decisions about subjects as well as when you get stuck doing assignments. In the end, University should be enjoyable and SUITS is here to help make that happen. Hope to see you this week!
